How we compared: we read each vendor's public website and documentation on 26 October 2026 and list only what they state there. PatentAssist facts come from this site. Prices are as published on that date. Disclosure: PatentAssist makes one of the products compared.
ClaimMaster is a long-running Word add-in that runs locally: proofreading, claim tools, office action shells and USPTO forms, with drafting help sent to an LLM you choose, including local models. PatentAssist is a web drafting workspace that writes the whole first draft from an invention disclosure, in USPTO, EPO, DPMA or IP India format, with drawings and prior art search, from $29 a month.
Features and pricing side by side

| Drafting formats | US (USPTO), EP (EPO), DE (DPMA, delivered in German with German headings) and IN (IP India provisional and complete specifications, with the Form 2 first page) | USPTO (forms, paragraph numbering, file wrapper downloads); no EP or other drafting format |

The verdict
Pick PatentAssist if you want the tool to produce the draft, or if you file in Europe or India. Pick ClaimMaster if your confidentiality rules require local processing or your own model endpoint, or if proofreading and US office action shells are the main need. They also sit well side by side: a PatentAssist draft exports to .docx, where ClaimMaster can check it.
Where PatentAssist pulls ahead
- A whole draft from a disclosure: PatentAssist writes the claims, then the description, abstract and figure descriptions. ClaimMaster turns your claims into other claim types, a summary, an abstract and figure text, and sends sections such as the background to your LLM.
- Offices: PatentAssist drafts to four office formats from one disclosure: USPTO, EPO, DPMA (delivered in German, with German headings) and IP India. ClaimMaster is built around USPTO practice.
- Drawings: PatentAssist renders patent drawings (Beta) from a figure plan with reference numerals. ClaimMaster generates figure templates and flowcharts from method claims.
- Search in the workspace: PatentAssist runs AI agentic patent search and patentability reports next to the draft.
- Nothing to set up: no add-in, no API keys, every feature on every plan. PatentAssist costs $29 a month (Lite, 300 credits) or $90 a month (Pro, 1,500 credits), with every feature on both plans and a 7-day free trial.
Why teams choose PatentAssist over ClaimMaster
- You want the first draft written, not assembled section by section.
- You draft for the EPO, DPMA or IP India.
- You want generated drawings and prior art search with the draft.
- You would rather not manage your own LLM endpoint.
When ClaimMaster may suit you better
- Your client terms require local processing or a model endpoint you control. ClaimMaster runs in Word on your machine and lets you pick the LLM, including local ones.
- You mainly need proofreading, claim checks, office action shells and USPTO forms.
- Cost per seat matters most: ClaimMaster's published prices start at $20 per user per month, billed annually.

PatentAssist vs ClaimMaster: frequently asked questions
Is PatentAssist a good alternative to ClaimMaster?
For writing the draft, yes: PatentAssist turns a disclosure into a full application in USPTO, EPO, DPMA or IP India format, with drawings. For local proofreading and USPTO office action shells, ClaimMaster does things PatentAssist does not. A 7-day free trial with 300 credits and every feature starts at sign-up. No demo, no sales call.
Can ClaimMaster use a local LLM?
Yes. ClaimMaster's drafting page says you can connect your own private OpenAI or Azure OpenAI models, Claude, or local LLMs, and its security page says the add-in runs locally. PatentAssist runs its AI on Azure OpenAI in EU regions under a GDPR DPA.
Who is responsible for GDPR with each tool?
ClaimMaster's GDPR page says it does not act as a data processor of your personal information, so GDPR compliance is your responsibility. PatentAssist acts as your processor: PatentAssist runs every AI request on Azure OpenAI in the EU (Sweden Central and Italy North). It covers every account with a GDPR Article 28 DPA, publishes its full sub-processor list and never trains on your content.
How do the prices compare?
ClaimMaster publishes $20 to $75 per user per month billed annually, or $24 to $90 monthly, depending on edition and add-ons, with a 30-day trial. PatentAssist costs $29 a month (Lite, 300 credits) or $90 a month (Pro, 1,500 credits), with every feature on both plans and a 7-day free trial.
