Each tool, honestly

1. PatentAssist.ai

Best for: Indian patent agents, startups and small firms filing at IPO (and USPTO)

PatentAssist starts from your invention disclosure, autofills the disclosure form, generates claims first, and then drafts the provisional or complete specification around them in IPO or USPTO format, ready to export as .docx. It also generates figure descriptions and patent drawings (Beta), patentability search reports, and has an AI copilot for mid-draft edits. Lite and Pro include the same features; the price buys monthly AI credits (300 or 1,500).

Strengths

  • Built around Indian practice: provisional and complete specifications in IPO format, exported with the Form 2 first page
  • Published self-serve pricing from $29 a month, and a 7-day free trial with no sales call
  • Claims, specification, figure descriptions, drawings (Beta) and patentability reports in one workspace
  • Free patent search across IPO, USPTO and EPO at search.patentassist.ai

Limits

  • No Microsoft Word add-in: you draft in the web editor and export .docx
  • Office action and FER response drafting is not part of the listed plan features
  • Drawing generation is still in Beta

2. Solve Intelligence

Best for: Law firms and in-house teams that want drafting, prosecution and charts in one platform

Solve Intelligence is a browser-based patent platform. It drafts full applications, including claims, specification, figures, chemical and Markush claims and sequence listings, and it also covers office action analysis and responses, prior art search, and invalidity, FTO and infringement charts. Templates are compatible with Microsoft Word. It is well funded ($40M Series B in December 2025) and states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification.

Strengths

  • Broadest feature set in this list: drafting, office actions, prior art and claim charts
  • Jurisdiction-specific drafting practice for USPTO, EPO and PCT, and style profiles per client
  • Published security certifications (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001)

Limits

  • No published pricing; you go through a demo
  • No India-specific drafting features published

3. PatentPal

Best for: Practitioners who write the claims themselves and want the rest of the specification and figures generated

PatentPal automates the mechanical writing in a patent application. You drop in your claims and it generates the detailed description, flowcharts for method claims, block diagrams for systems, figure descriptions, an abstract and a summary. Drafts export to Word, and figures to Visio or PowerPoint.

Strengths

  • Focused and simple: claims in, specification and figures out
  • Figure output you can edit in Visio or PowerPoint
  • Free trial without a sales call

Limits

  • Starts from finished claims; it does not draft claims from a disclosure
  • No pricing on its own website
  • No India-specific features published

4. DeepIP

Best for: Firms that draft in Microsoft Word and want AI inside it, including office action responses

DeepIP works inside Microsoft Word. It generates claims, specifications and abstracts from invention disclosures, analyses office action rejections and drafts responses with case-law citations, and lists patent drawing generation, prior art search, and patentability, FTO and invalidity work. Its homepage names USPTO, EPO and other offices including IPO. It raised a $25M Series B in March 2026.

Strengths

  • Works in Word, so the drafting habits of a firm stay the same
  • Office action responses as well as new drafts
  • Names many patent offices, and states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001

Limits

  • No published pricing
  • The free trial goes through a request form
  • Indian provisional and complete specification workflows are not described

5. XLScout Drafting LLM

Best for: Teams drafting US or Japanese applications who already use XLScout's prior art tools

XLScout's Drafting LLM generates claims, abstract, background and detailed description in a web editor, with AI-assisted flowcharts and block diagrams. It drafts in US and JP formats, with more promised, and connects to XLScout's Novelty Checker for prior art. XLScout states SOC 2 Type II compliance.

Strengths

  • Drafting connected to XLScout's own novelty and prior art search
  • Covers utility and design patents
  • Flowcharts and block diagrams with descriptions

Limits

  • Only US and JP drafting formats today
  • No published pricing

6. Patlytics

Best for: Large firms and in-house teams that need drafting plus infringement, invalidity and portfolio work

Patlytics is an AI patent platform covering the patent lifecycle: drafting from disclosures, office action analysis and responses, prior art and invalidity search, evidence-of-use and infringement charts, and portfolio work. It raised a $40M Series B in April 2026 and states SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001.

Strengths

  • Strong on litigation-side work: infringement and invalidity charts
  • Large prior art corpus covering patents and non-patent literature

Limits

  • Pricing on request, sold through demos
  • Drawing generation not listed
  • No India-specific features published

7. ClaimMaster

Best for: US practitioners who want proofreading, office action shells and GPT tools inside Word

ClaimMaster is a long-running Microsoft Word add-in for patent proofreading, claim automation, office action shells and USPTO forms. Its top plan adds GPT-based tools that generate sections such as the background, define terms, and rewrite text. It is one of the few tools here with published prices.

Strengths

  • Published, low per-user pricing and a 30-day free trial
  • Mature proofreading and claim-checking tools
  • Runs locally in Word

Limits

  • An assistant for drafting in Word rather than a full first-draft generator
  • Built around USPTO practice

8. IP Author

Best for: Corporate patent groups and firms filing at USPTO and EPO who want published annual pricing

IP Author runs an AI interview to capture the invention, then drafts claims and specification with editable flowcharts and block diagrams. It also drafts office action responses (§112/102/103), runs prior art search, and offers evidence-of-use work. Prices are published on 12-month terms, with a 14-day free trial.

Strengths

  • Published pricing and a 14-day free trial
  • Guided invention interview for disclosures
  • Drafting and office action responses in one bundle

Limits

  • USPTO and EPO only, per its pricing page
  • Annual commitment

9. Qthena (Questel)

Best for: Firms already working with Questel that want drafting and prosecution help

Qthena is an AI drafting and prosecution assistant built by ipQuants and backed by Questel. It produces first drafts from a claim tree or disclosure, interprets sketches and drawings, suggests claim scope, and has a drawings feature. UK firm HGF uses it for drafting, office action responses, oppositions and appeals.

Strengths

  • Backed by Questel, a large IP services company
  • Covers prosecution work as well as first drafts

Limits

  • No published prices
  • No free trial listed

10. Rowan Patents (Clarivate)

Best for: Firms that want a structured drafting environment that keeps claims, specification and figures in sync

Rowan Patents is a drafting environment in which specification text, claims, figures, chemical structures and sequences stay linked and renumber automatically, with AI-assisted section drafting. Clarivate acquired its developer, Rowan TELS, in July 2024, and it is still offered under the Clarivate name.

Strengths

  • Linked claims, specification and figures, with automatic renumbering
  • Backed by Clarivate

Limits

  • Replaces Word as the drafting environment, which is a bigger change for a firm
  • No published pricing or trial

How to choose an AI patent drafting tool

  • Start with the office you file at. Indian filings need provisional and complete specifications in IPO format, filed with Form 2. Most tools here are built for USPTO and EPO practice; ask each vendor to show you an IPO-format draft before you buy.
  • Decide where you want to draft. If your firm lives in Microsoft Word, a Word add-in (DeepIP, ClaimMaster) changes the least. A web app (most of the others) gives you a dedicated editor and exports .docx.
  • Check what the draft starts from. Some tools start from your invention disclosure and write the claims; others, such as PatentPal, need finished claims.
  • Look past the first draft. If FER and office action responses are a large share of your work, weigh tools that draft them (Solve Intelligence, DeepIP, Patlytics, IP Author, Qthena).
  • Know the price before the demo. Only PatentAssist, ClaimMaster and IP Author publish prices. For a solo patent agent or a startup, a self-serve trial is usually the quickest way to judge output quality.
  • Test with a real disclosure. Run one past invention through two or three trials and compare the claims, not the marketing.

Before you draft, check the prior art with a free patent search across IPO, USPTO and EPO. For side-by-side detail, see the PatentAssist comparisons.

AI patent drafting tools: frequently asked questions

What is the best AI patent drafting tool for India?

For filings at the Indian Patent Office, choose a tool that drafts provisional and complete specifications in IPO format. Of the tools in this list, PatentAssist is the one that publishes IPO-format output. DeepIP lists IPO among supported offices; the others publish USPTO, EPO, PCT or JP formats.

Is there a free AI patent drafting tool?

No tool here is free for ongoing use, but several have free trials: PatentAssist (7 days), IP Author (14 days), ClaimMaster (30 days), and PatentPal. DeepIP's trial starts with a request form. Solve Intelligence, Patlytics and Qthena are sold through demos.

Can AI draft the complete specification I file with Form 2?

AI can produce a strong first draft of the claims and the complete specification, but a registered patent agent still has to review it, check the claims against the prior art, and take responsibility for what is filed. PatentAssist generates provisional and complete specifications in IPO format for that review.

Will an AI drafting tool replace my patent agent?

No. These tools draft faster, but the judgement on claim scope, prior art and prosecution strategy stays with the patent agent or attorney. They are most useful for getting a reviewable first draft quickly.

Which AI patent drafting tools work inside Microsoft Word?

DeepIP and ClaimMaster are Word add-ins. Solve Intelligence, PatentPal, XLScout, Patlytics, IP Author and PatentAssist are web apps; most export to Word.

Which tools publish their prices?

PatentAssist, ClaimMaster and IP Author publish prices. Solve Intelligence, DeepIP, XLScout, Patlytics, Qthena and Rowan Patents are priced on request, and PatentPal does not show prices on its website.
