How we compared: we read each vendor's public website and documentation on 26 October 2026 and list only what they state there. PatentAssist facts come from this site. Prices are as published on that date. Disclosure: PatentAssist makes one of the products compared.
Patent Bots and PatentAssist solve different problems. Patent Bots is a Microsoft Word add-in for US practice: proofreading, office action shells, USPTO forms and an AI assistant, Sprocket, that drafts claims and suggests figures while you write. PatentAssist writes the whole first draft from an invention disclosure, in USPTO, EPO, DPMA or IP India format, with drawings and prior art search, from $29 a month.
Features and pricing side by side
| Feature | PatentAssist | Patent Bots |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Patent attorneys, firms, in-house teams and startups drafting for the USPTO, EPO, DPMA and IP India | US practitioners who want proofreading and an AI drafting assistant in Word |
| Drafting formats | US (USPTO), EP (EPO), DE (DPMA, delivered in German with German headings) and IN (IP India provisional and complete specifications, with the Form 2 first page) | USPTO-oriented (USPTO forms, IDS, Patent Center login); no EP drafting format |
| Delivery | Web app with a dedicated drafting editor and .docx export. Interface in English, German, Spanish and French | Microsoft Word add-in plus web tools |
| Proofreading and USPTO forms | Not a proofreading tool; the .docx export goes into your usual review | Core product: claim and specification proofreading, IDS and USPTO forms, office action shells |
| Office action responses | IP India FER responses (Beta); USPTO support in development | Yes: office action response drafting and shells |
| Drawings | Figure plans, reference numerals and rendered patent drawings (Beta), plus figure descriptions | Suggests figures; rule-based flowcharts in PowerPoint or Visio |
| EU data, GDPR and security | Every AI request runs on Azure OpenAI in the EU (Sweden Central, Italy North); the app and its files are hosted in Azure Central India. A GDPR Article 28 DPA covers every account, the full sub-processor list is public, and your content never trains a model | All servers in the United States; SOC 2 Type II. Documents are not stored or used for AI training |
| Pricing (as of 26 October 2026) | Published: Lite $29/month, Pro $90/month, every feature on both; Enterprise quoted | Individual $702 per person per year (registered practitioners at law firms); law-firm pricing by calculator, with a $100/month or $400/year minimum; company pricing by portfolio size |
| Free trial | Self-serve: 7 days, 300 credits, every feature, no sales call | Two weeks, work email required |

The verdict
If you want the first draft written for you, or you file outside the US, PatentAssist is the better fit. If your day is spent in Word on US matters and you want proofreading and office action shells, Patent Bots does things PatentAssist does not. The two also work together: draft in PatentAssist, export .docx and proofread in Word.
Where PatentAssist pulls ahead
- A whole draft, not an assistant: PatentAssist writes the claims and then the description, abstract and figure descriptions from your disclosure. Patent Bots' Sprocket drafts claims and recommends language inside a document you are writing.
- Offices beyond the US: PatentAssist drafts to four office formats from one disclosure: USPTO, EPO, DPMA (delivered in German, with German headings) and IP India. Patent Bots is built around USPTO practice, with no EP drafting format.
- Drawings: PatentAssist builds figure plans, reference numerals and rendered drawings (Beta). Patent Bots suggests figures and generates rule-based flowcharts in PowerPoint or Visio.
- Where AI runs: PatentAssist runs every AI request on Azure OpenAI in the EU (Sweden Central and Italy North). It covers every account with a GDPR Article 28 DPA, publishes its full sub-processor list and never trains on your content. Patent Bots states that all its servers are in the United States and that it does not store your documents.
- Monthly or yearly: PatentAssist costs $29 a month (Lite, 300 credits) or $90 a month (Pro, 1,500 credits), with every feature on both plans and a 7-day free trial; a year costs $290 (Lite) or $900 (Pro). Patent Bots' individual plan is $702 per person per year.
Why teams choose PatentAssist over Patent Bots
- You want a complete first draft from a disclosure.
- You file at the EPO, DPMA or IP India as well as the USPTO.
- You want generated patent drawings and figure descriptions.
- You want AI processing in the EU under a GDPR DPA.
When Patent Bots may suit you better
- You draft US applications yourself in Word and mainly want proofreading and claim checks.
- You need USPTO office action shells and AI help with US rejections. PatentAssist does not draft USPTO office action responses.
- You want a vendor that holds SOC 2 Type II itself. PatentAssist relies on the SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications of Azure and AWS and does not hold them in its own name.
