How we compared: we read each vendor's public website and documentation on 26 October 2026 and list only what they state there. PatentAssist facts come from this site. Prices are as published on that date. Disclosure: PatentAssist makes one of the products compared.
IP Author and PatentAssist both draft full applications from a disclosure in the browser and both publish prices. IP Author covers the USPTO and EPO, adds USPTO and EPO office action responses, and sells 12-month terms from $4,800 a year per tool. PatentAssist drafts to USPTO, EPO, DPMA and IP India formats with rendered drawings and patent search, from $29 a month or $290 a year.

The verdict
If you draft for the DPMA or IP India, want rendered drawings, or want a monthly plan, PatentAssist is the better fit at a lower price. If you need USPTO and EPO office action responses from the same tool, or EU storage of your documents, IP Author offers both and PatentAssist does not.
Where PatentAssist pulls ahead
- More offices: PatentAssist drafts to four office formats from one disclosure: USPTO, EPO, DPMA (delivered in German, with German headings) and IP India. IP Author's pricing page says USPTO and EPO support is available "for now", and its drafting page says PCT-specific drafting is not supported.
- Drawings: PatentAssist renders patent drawings (Beta) from a figure plan with reference numerals. IP Author generates editable flowcharts and block diagrams.
- Price and term: PatentAssist costs $29 a month (Lite, 300 credits) or $90 a month (Pro, 1,500 credits), with every feature on both plans and a 7-day free trial. IP Author is $4,800 a year for drafting, $4,800 for office action responses or $9,590 for both, each on a 12-month commitment.
- Search in the workspace: AI agentic patent search and patentability reports over USPTO, EPO and IP India records, next to the draft.
Why teams choose PatentAssist over IP Author
- You draft for the DPMA or IP India as well as the USPTO and EPO.
- You want rendered patent drawings, not only flowcharts and block diagrams.
- You want a monthly plan, or a lower yearly price for drafting.
When IP Author may suit you better
- You want USPTO and EPO office action responses in the same tool. PatentAssist's office action support covers Indian FERs only, in beta.
- You need your documents stored in the EU. IP Author stores and processes EU customers' data in EU AWS regions; PatentAssist runs AI in the EU but hosts the app and files in Azure Central India.
- You want a vendor that holds SOC 2 Type II itself. IP Author states it; PatentAssist relies on Azure's and AWS's certifications.
